Microblading Vs. Digital Brows

Microblading has become one of the most affordable & popular cosmetic procedures in the past few years. As the industry continues to grow & perfect the techniques being offered, techniques for achieving the 'perfect brows' are always evolving. Microblading refers to the method of manually implanting pigment into the upper dermal layer using a series of needles grouped into a linear 'blade' shape. Pigment is implanted as the blade is dragged through the skin in a linear shape to mimic natural hair. Digital brows can create similar hair stroke patterns as microblading. A digital permanent makeup machine is used with a very fine single tip (0.18mm) needle which penetrates the skin anywhere from 110-130 times per second. The pigment is implanted at a controlled speed & depth into the dermal layer of the skin (deeper than upper dermal layer) and causes less trauma to the skin than the needdles being dragged through the skin with a microblade.

Not all skin types are created equal-- meaning, only certain skin types will benefit from microblading (dry to normal skin type). Clients with Combination or Oily skin type are not ideal candidates for microblading as the hairstrokes tend to blur. However, all skin types can benefit from the precision of digital brows. Wink Studio is proud to be one of the few permanent makeup artists in Calgary to provide the signature Digital Brows-- an advanced technique that is offered separately or can be added to microblading to give the brows more depth.

Clients may choose to add on digital shading to their microblading procedure to achieve a smoother transition between their natural hair and the microbladed 'hairs.' Whereas microblading alone often uses 1 needle and 1 (at most 2) pigment colour, digital brows can add depth by using 2-3 different shades/ saturations of a pigment. A base colour is chosen for the hair strokes, then the base colour is modified (lighter & darker in saturation) to create the gradient/ dimensional effect in digital brows.

As the treatment area is subject to deeper pigment penetration through the digital brow method than microblading, longer lasting results may be achieved than microblading alone. Clients who receive digital brows shading with their microblading often report heavier and solid crusting/ peeling during their healing period.
